(NAOBF): North American Organic Brewers Festival 2013

And the beer festivals just keep coming!  Earlier this summer I went to the Vancouver Summer Brewfest and a few weekends ago I got to check out the North American Organic Brewers Festival here in Portland.  This is one of my favorite beer festivals, since it combines two of my favorite things: beer and organic beer.

“Drink organic, save the planet, one beer at a time!”

A few of my friends ended up volunteering at the event (yeah free beer!) and I managed to crash their party and help out as well.  I was pouring PINTS Brewing Co.‘s Green Line Organic IPA, but it ran out before I had the chance to try it!  Good thing this brewery is right by my house so I can go check it out and give it a try later.

Here is what I did get to try:

  •  Yellow Wolves of Thailand by Alameda Brewing Co. (Note:  This was my favorite beer from the festival!  Full of mangoes, flaked coconut, Thai basil and ginger.  Yup, I love fruit beer!)
  • Ambacht Dark Farmhouse Ale by Ambacht Brewing (Note:  This was my friend’s favorite beer.  He’s a huge fan of Farmhouse style beers.  He was on a mission to find his favorite farmhouse beer at the festival and this was it.)
  • Ambacht G++ by Ambacht Brewing
  • Emerald Triangle IPA by Eel River Brewing
  • Chai Oatmeal Porter by Gilgamesh Brewing
  • Backseat Blonde by Laht Neppur Brewing Co.
  • Logsdon Seizoen Bretta by Logsdon Farmhouse Ales
  • “I’d Like to Buy the World a Kolsch” by Old Town Brewing
  • Overlook Organic Heirloom by Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider
  • BEET-nik by Two Kilts Brewing Co.
  • BABA Organic Black Lager by Uinta Brewing Co.
  • Bacon Brown Ale by Uncommon Brewers
  • Anthem Cider by Wandering Aengus/Anthem Cider

What is your favorite organic beer?

Rye Beer Fest – 2013

Posted on June 12, 2013 · Leave a Comment

rye-beerAfter the Bruins won the Eastern Conference last Friday, best friend Beckie, fellow beer buddy Adam and I headed over to EastBurn to check out the Rye Beer Festival.  This was put on by Taplister, which helps craft beer fans discover craft beer through their website, mobile, and iPhone app. (I’ve done freelance writing for them before, you can see it here: Oregon Beer Country Launches.)

For those of you who don’t know, rye beer refers to any beer in which rye is substituted for some portion of the barley malt.  It’s a big thing amongst homebrewers and microbreweries.  The most common example is a play off India Pale Ales (IPAs) called Rye-P-As.  Another example is the “roggenbier” which is produced with up to 60% rye malt.  This style originated in Bavaria and is brewed with the same type of yeast as a German “hefeweizen” with a similar light, dry, spicy taste.

Here is what we tried:

  • Rye-teous Dude Stout by Short Snout Brewing  This was my favorite beer of the night.
  • You know its going to be allrye’t by PDX U Brew  Who is hosting a fundraiser to help build a mobile medical clinic here in Portland. Sign up here!
  • RyePA by Boring Brewing Co.
  • 2013 Stone Imperial Russian Stout aged in Templeton Rye Whiskey Barrels by Stone Brewing
  • Hop Odyssey Imperial Red Rye by Green Flash Brewing This beer was Adam’s favorite of the night.
  • Mojo RYE’sn Double IPA by Old Town Brewing
  • Ripstop Rye Pilsner by Basecamp Brewing Co.  This roving tap was Beckie’s favorite of the night.
  • Black Moon Rye-sin’ Stout by Oakshire Brewing
  • Smallwares Saison by Breakside Brewery
  • Reuben’s Imperial Rye IPA by Reuben’s Brews
  • Quiet Rye-it by Fort George Brewery
  • Raptor Rye IPA by Three Creeks Brewing Co.

What rye beers do you like?
