Lager Fest 2013

Posted on September 3, 2013 · Leave a Comment

lagerfest 2013Apparently it has been the summer of beer festivals.  I’m not complaining at all.  Last weekend, my friends Jeffrey, Simon and I hit up the first annual Lager Fest 2013!  Like any first annual anything, there were some weird things.  $10 for a plastic cup, with a discount sticker on the bottom.  (Honestly, you aren’t fooling anyone.)  Bracelets for tickets.  The $20 entry got you 10 samples, however, there were 12 LagerFest icons on each bracelet.  Thanks for the two extra samples, almost makes up for the $10 plastic cup.

While I’m not a big fan of the plastic cups, the bracelet for tickets idea was a new and interesting one for me.  You can’t really loose them, which is common with tokens.  You could still “share” by handing over your arm for a buddy to get a sample.  But I’m not sure how it would work for multi-day events.  Plus, having more than one bracelet looks a little funny…

Regardless of “first annual” issues that I’m confident will be smooth out for the “second annual” event next year.  I’m a huge lager fan coming from the East Coast, so I was excited to try some new beers.  For those of you who don’t know:

Lagers are a type of beer that is fermented and conditions at a low temperature.  Pale lagers are also know as bock, pilsners (pils) and marzen, while dark lagers can be called dunkel or schwarzbier.  The storage of cold beer was originally called “lagering” in caves during the medieval period.

Here is what we tried:

  • Float by Breakside
  • Wild Rice Pils by Buckman Botanical Brewery
  • Experimental Batch* by Deschutes
  • Discount Double Czech by Elysian
  • Pfeifferhorn Lager by Epic
  • Pivo Pils by Firestone Walker
  • Down 5 Lager by Fort George
  • Dark Meddle by Gigantic
  • Filbert Lager by Gilgamesh – “Filbert” is Portland-ese for “hazelnut”
  • Octoberfest by Heater Allen
  • El Comandante by Lompoc
  • Lager by Montucky Cold Snacks – My favorite of the Fest!
  • Merica by Oakshire
  • Dortmunder by Occidental
  • Black Lager by Rogue
  • Foam by Sierra Nevada
  • Downward Spiral by Widmer

What is your favorite lager?

* Seriously, I think it would be a fun job to name beers.  Can’t people be more creative?

IIPA Fest 2013

Posted on August 21, 2013 · 2 Comments

A few weekends ago, my friends Adam, Stephanie and I headed to Saravez’s (featured in the documentary “The Love of Beer”) for the 4th Annual IIPA Fest.

iipa

For those of you who don’t know IIPA stands for “Imperial Indian Pale Ale.”  They are also called Double IPAs.  This is an Indian Pale Ale that is a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs (Indian Pale Ales).  They typically have an alcohol content above 7.5% by volume.  That being said.  When you go to an IIPA Fest:

  • Don’t drive or ride your bike – just walk or take a cab.
  • Drink plenty of water – like a glass for every 4 oz. taster
  • Eat food – breakfast, lunch and dinner.

That being said, here is what we tried:
iipa-notes

Fish Tale Brewery

Jenna and Dainty at Fish Tale Brewery

I’m kind of a brewery fanatic.  I tend to choose where I’m going to eat based on new breweries I’ve never been too.  I live in the micro brewery capital of the world.  Who can blame me?  I also have a pretty “epic” logo pint glass collection from my travels, last Thanksgiving week was no except.  My dad was visiting from China (I have him to thank for getting me into breweries) and Kirk (my younger brother) was playing basketball in Washington.

For lunch we stopped at Fish Brewing Co. in Olympia, WA.  They have an entire organic beer series, called Fish Tale Organic Ales.  I was pretty bummed when I found out they are out of logo pint glasses…

Fast forward to dinner, we decided to check out the Green Dragon, a local brewpub owned by Rogue that Dad had heard about from some friend in China.  And guess what?  They were also out of pint glasses!  I was so bummed and told our waiter about what had happened at Fish Brewing.  She disappeared and came back with a Fish Brewing pint glass for me!  Turns out Green Dragon sells Fish Beer there and had some promo pint glasses.  She seriously made my day!

When was your last great experience with customer service?
