First Beer I Ever Brewed – Amber Ale

Posted on April 29, 2011 · 6 Comments

This was the first beer I ever brewed.  I adapted an Easy Pale Ale recipe to create this Amber Ale.

Ingredients:

  • 7 lbs Amber Liquid Malt Extract
  • 1 lb Crystal (80L)
  • .5 lb Special Roast (50L)
  • 1 tsp Gypsum
  • 2 tsp Irish Moss
  • 2 oz Cascade Hops (alpha 7.0)
  • 2 oz Fuggle Hops (alpha 4.5)
  • Wyeast 1056 American Ale Yeast

Hops Schedule:

  • 1 oz Cascade @ 60 min
  • .5 oz Fuggle @ 60 min
  • .5 oz Cascade @ 30 min
  • .5 oz Fuggle @ 30 min
  • .5 oz Cascade @ 2 min
  • .5 oz Fuggle @ 2 min
  • .5 oz Fuggle – Dry Hop (in secondary)

Directions:

  1. Steep grains at 155*F for 30 mins.
  2. Remove grains and add gypsum.
  3. Add malt extract and bring to boil.
  4. Follow hops schedule.
  5. Add Irish Moss during last 20 minutes of boil.
  6. Cool
  7. Top up to 5 galloons.
  8. Pitch yeast.
  9. Relax.

What was the first beer you ever brewed?

About BiteSize

Hi! I’m Jenna, but I got the nickname BiteSize in high school. I love homebrewing beer, thus BiteSize Brews. A blog focused on homebrewing, local brewery reviews and recipes. I’m lucky enough to live in the microbrewery capital of the world. I’m also a big fan of social media (chances are I’ll sprinkle a bit of it into this blog).

I also brewed an amber! A Fat Tire clone, actually.
