A couple months ago my friend Lisa sent me a Living Social Deal to Homebrew Exchange. Homebrew Exchange is a local Portland beer supply shop that I hadn’t been to yet and since you always need fresh ingredients to make beer I signed up right away. I’ve been back twice and can honestly say it’s my new home brew supply shop. Not only is it nearby but that staff there is super friendly and helpful. Lisa and I went back to cash out our Living Social Deal and worked with AJ, the owner to create our own recipe. Here it is: Bite Size Honey Wheat:
Ingredients:
- 3.3 lb Wheat Liquid Malt Extract
- 2 lb Light Dry Malt Extract
- 12 oz Torrefied Wheat
- 12 oz Crystal 12L Malt
- 18 oz Honey
- 1 oz Perle Hops
- 1 oz Hallertau Hops
- German Ale Yeast
Directions:
- Steep grains at 155*F for 30 minutes.
- Turn off heat and add malt extract. Stir until dissolved.
- Turn heat back on and bring to boil.
- Boil for 60 minutes following hops schedule.
- Add honey.
- Cool wort to about 75*F.
- Pitch yeast.
Hops Schedule:
- 1 oz Perle Hops (leaf, @60 min)
- 0.5 oz Hallertau (pellet, @15 min)
- 0.5 oz Hallertau (pellet, @1 min)
What do you love most about your homebrew shop?
Hey thanks for the shout out! How did the beer turn out? See you around.
It’s still carbonating in bottles, but I’ll be sure to you know.
This sounds delicious! That’s cool that you created your own recipe. I’m still a little nervous to to do that, but would like to give it a shot with a bit of help from an expert.
It’s pretty easy to manipulate recipes, you don’t need to be an expert. More recipes coming next week.
