After hitting up Salmon River Brewery for the Duck Game, Joe and I spent the following day at McCall Brewing Company with his friend, Gustav. We were even joined by Louis, the brewery’s owner.
Even Louis tried to sell me on McCall, Idaho. “Other than playing in the ocean, you can be here for 10 days and do something different outdoors each day: biking, fishing, hiking, skiing, you want to do it – we’ve got it.”
I learned that Louis has owned the brewery for the past decade and that Joe’s dad used to take him and his sister to McCall Brewing Company for dinner (and sodas) while their family was building their cabin.
Over conversations of summertime in McCall, we devoured some nachos and enjoyed the following beers. (Basically, every beer they had available, minus Dunkelweizen – which was tapped.)
- Say Whut! Coconut Porter – Another fruit beer to enjoy, great porter if you like dark beers. Minimal coconut flavors.
- Wobbily Man Scotch Ale – Good balance of booze and beer.
- Mackinaw Red – Classic red. What is a “Mackinaw” anyways?
- Tanglefoot – BEST BEER from McCall Brewing Company. It tastes like Christmas in a glass!
- Minimalist Bane IPA – Minimally good IPA. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it could use more hops.
- Hippie Hopped Pale Ale – They should just make this an IPA and skip the confusion.
- Lemon Ginger Hefe – My personal favorite. I love fruit beers. The boys didn’t think it was that good. “Fruit beers are the bottom bitch” – Gustav.
- Devious Intent Imperial Stout – If you like stouts, this is a great beer. Not too boozy for an imperial, which is nice.
- Kilowatt Kolsch – Good summer beer. Maybe I’ll come back to McCall and enjoy this on the patio.
Have you ever been to McCall, Idaho? Or McCall Brewing Company? What did you think? What is your favorite beer?
