Here is the cost break down for the Amber Ale:
- American Yeast Ale: $7.00
- 7 lbs. Liquid Malt Extract (Amber): $13.65
- Cascade Hops (Alpha 7.0): $5.00
- Fuggle Hops (Alpha 4.5): $5.95
- 1 lb. Crystal Malt Grain (80L): $1.30
- 0.5 lb. Special Roast Malt Grain (50L): $0.50
Grand Total: $33.40. Spent for 5 gallons of beer. One gallon equals 128 ounces. Times five equals 640 ounces. Divided by 12 ounce bottles equals 54 bottles (rounded up). $33.40 / 54 = $0.62 cost per beer.*
Do you keep track of how much your beer costs per bottle?
* This doesn’t take into account the cost of caps, sanitizer, Irish Moss and Gypsum. These items raise the cost of the beer, but since I can use them for more than one batch I don’t count them.

This is pretty cheap, based on my experience so far. I think my cost is a little closer to $1/bottle, but not more than that. Some of mine have called for more liquid malt extract, which drives up the price.

Yeah, I can see that being the case. I try to get free organic berries from friends for most of my fruit beers too. $1/bottle is still pretty cheap!

Most of my costs are .62 to .85 cents a bottle. It helps to save yeast and recycle it. My last batch cost me only .52 cents a bottle because I reused yeast. Saved my 6.75 by reusing it.

Great suggestion Tink! How do you recycle your yeast? That is something I want to get into doing (or getting some from local breweries) but I’m not sure about storage.

I use quart sized mason jars and save about 2/3rds of my slurry. I have some rogue pacman i need to get off my hands. Saturday want to meet up for lunch and a beer to discuss beer?
BiteSize says
Oh man! Wish I could have! I was out of town and this weekend I’m busy 🙁 Sometime next week? I’ve used Rogue Pacman before. Pretty good stuff! Another recipe coming soon…
