Meet Dave.

Posted on September 26, 2011 · 3 Comments

Meet Dave.

Dave (in plaid), Jenna (me) and Andy (in grey) at Word Domination Summit! (Right before we broke the hammock.)

Meet Dave.

He’s the guy I lovingly refer to as “hubby” on Twitter.  (There is a beer story involved here*).

His favorite beer for the fall is Shipyard Brewing Company’s Pumpkinhead, based out of Maine.  “I’ve been drinking them like crazy and apparently they ran out of stock in Rhode Island last year.”  (I’m sure Dave isn’t solely responsible for that one…)  Samuel Adams’ Summer Ale is his summer classic brew of choice.  And another “crazy good!” beer is Jacob Lienenkugel Brewing Company’s Sunset Wheat, brewed in Wisconsin.

Writer. New Englander. All around great guy.

He’s much more than that.  He’s humble, passionate and hardworking.  He puts people’s needs in front of his own.  (Babysitting a Twitter friend in Boston or giving money to the homeless outside a club).  Loves his Boston sports teams.  (Willing to skip out on a conference to cheer on the Bruins to be 2011 Champions).  And he won’t let obstacles get in his way (like hurricanes).

He’s also an author.  And today, September 26, 2011, his debut book, Lead Without Followers comes out!

Lead Without Followers is the culmination of the last three years of Dave’s life.  (And the only thing Dave has talked about the entire time I’ve known him.)  Lead Without Followers details Dave’s journey through leadership and aides the reader to understand the underlying causes of our world’s modern leadership problems.  Through radically redefining the meaning of leadership, Lead Without Followers reveals an inspired, widely accessible and intrinsically human solution, a heartfelt alternative leadership philosophy based in love, selflessness, compassion and hope.

Do yourself a favor, if you are even remotely interested in leadership in any way shape or form, and get the book.  As Dave says, “Your leadership is birthed by your own choosing and made special through your own unique talents, gifts, passions, and abilities.”  As someone who works with middle school girls as a leader, I cannot even begin to tell you how right on Dave is with that one.  Follow your heart, play to your strengths and do your best to completely understand the culture within you are trying to do work.

I have to ask: If you only have one sentence to pitch somebody on why they should want to be a leader in any way, shape or form, what would you say to him or her?

* While at World Domination Summit, I brought my friend, Sean, who was working crazy hard assisting with the conference a beer at the opening party.  Dave was standing right next to him and said, “You bring beers?  OMG! I love you, will you marry me?”  And the rest was history (or at least a really long running Twitter joke.)

#WDS Breweries to Check Out!

Posted on June 2, 2011 · Leave a Comment

At Adaptu, I’m lucky enough to interact with bloggers all the time.  One of my favorites is Baker from ManvsDebt.com.  Baker’s in my hometown for World Domination Summit, an conference put on by Chris Guillebeau, author of The Art of Non Conformity, where 500+ attendees from all over the world are coming to Portland, OR strategizing and adventure!

To help attendees feel more at home here in Portland, I took Baker, his wife Courtney and their daughter Mili to two great local breweries!  Since this is a beer blog, I thought I’d share them here with you all here too.

First stop, Deschutes Brewery:  – I’m a big fan of Deschutes (or “Dutchess” as I used to call it when I was little).  I love their sustainability practices including using their spent grain to make their flat bread entrees.  While I’m a big supporter of organics and love Deschutes Green Lakes Organic Ale, my all time favorite beer is the Twilight Summer Ale.  Released just in time for #WDS!

Our second brewery stop was McMenamins The Rams Head:  as an added bonus, our friend, Sean Ogle joined us.  McMenamins locations are known for their artwork, each location is different and features local artists.  The buildings are literally covered, ceilings to floor with art.  I love it!  They have a great happy hour, cheap food and free wifi.  What else do you need for to catch up with new friends from WDS?  My favorite beer is the Ruby Ale.  Definitely try it or the Ruby-Raspberry Milkshake.  Beer + Ice Cream = Dream Combination!

Coming to #WDS?  What are you most excited about?  Going to check out any breweries?  If so, what ones?

Getting My Act Together, Part 2 – Social 2011

Marcel LeBrun, Radian6 CEO and Jenna talking at Social 2011

Marcel LeBrun, Radian6 CEO and Jenna talking at Social 2011

Yesterday, I talked about re-prioritizing my blog.  Getting over the fact that it isn’t perfect and being okay with that.  The thing is it took me awhile to get use to that idea.  Like 40ish days.  And while I was wrestling with this concept of launching an imperfect blog I got my butt kicked again.  This time in Boston, MA.

When I’m not blogging about beer, I’m the Community Manager at Adaptu, a free online financial website that helps users better understand their finances to help take a more active role in the financial decisions that affect their lives.  I engage with the online personal finance community both on Adaptu and else where on the internet.  Two weeks ago, I go the opportunity to travel to Boston, MA for Radian6 Social 2011, a conference designed for people who oversee social media programs.  Once again, I met a lot of amazing people, learned a ton and got inspired again to get my blog up and running.  See a pattern here?

The highlight of the conference was ending up on stage the second day of the conference with Marcel Lebrun, Radian6 CEO and Mitch Joel, author of Six Pixels of Separation.  WHAT?!?  How did this happen?

Two separate conversations happening on Twitter.  One with @lebrun talking about doing a Radian6 home brew series for next year’s Social 2012.  Another one with @mitchjoel talking about 24 year olds doing social media marketing.  Did I mention my Twitter page, @bite4size, has a link to http://bitesizebrews.com/ which still had that glorious 7 month old Coming Soon post?  Butt kicker number two!

In less than two months, I’d had two different experiences pushing me forward in getting my blog up and running.  Like yesterday, I’m doing it.  Finally.

When was the last time you were pushed to do something great?

Side comment, once again.  This post doesn’t really talk about beer directly.  But if you are in Boston, MA I would suggest you check out Harpoon Brewery and Sam Adams.

Getting My Act Together, Part 1 – SXSW

Posted on April 25, 2011 · 6 Comments

I’ve been talking about blogging about beer for over a year now…

SXSW

Working at Adaptu's SXSW Meet Up

I started blogging in college at http://j4strom.blogspot.com/ then after college played with the idea of actually focusing my blog on a particular subject and since I’m passionate about beer it seemed like a good place to start.  I bought the URL: http://bitesizebrews.com/ in August 2010 and …

Nothing happened…

I didn’t do anything with my new blog.  I kept making beer and drinking beer and talking about beer and talking about blogging about beer.  But I didn’t actually do it.  Life got in the way.  I wanted my blog to be perfect before I started actually blogging and I just didn’t make working on this blog a priority in my life.

Then something AWESOME happened.  Forty days ago I went on a 12-day road trip from Portland, OR to Austin, TX for SXSW with my two friends, Sean Ogle and Ryan Martin.  We also stopped in Las Vegas for the weekend on the way back home with Jenny Blake.  You can read all about our trip here, here and here, respectively.  Needless to say I had a blast!  Met a ton of really awesome people, learned a lot and was truly inspired to get this blog up and running.

But there is more, while at SXSW Seth Godin, a marketing and blogging genius, published SXSW Pokes.  This eBook featured 50 inspiring stories about taking initiative from accomplished entrepreneurs and up-and-coming stars.  Guess who’s in it?  Guess what link The Domino Project (Godin’s publishing initiative) mentions?  Yeah, talk about a kick in the pants!  Huge marketing blogger mentions you in a book about taking initiative, links to your blog and there is a coming soon page from seven months ago YIKES!

So here I am to say, I’m doing it.  I’m getting over the fact that this blog isn’t perfect.  That I’m okay with that.  It will evolve over time (and if you have any suggestions please let me know).  But the point is I’m doing this.  Committing time to writing, time to engaging with people about beer and life and learning how to blog better.  Making it a priority.

When was the last time you re-prioritized something in your life?

Side comment: Sorry there is no actually talk of beer in this blog.  While at SXSW I did try the local (512) Brewing Company and spent a lot of time hanging out at Ten Oak, the manager there is a home brewer.  Definitely two places to check out if your in Austin, TX.
